Bored of the gym? Fed up with the sanitized ‘sporting experiences’ that companies sell? Then run, screaming from your desk in cubicle land and go jump in a river!
Now I mean that in the nicest possible sense. You see this weekend I take the call from the Outdoor Swimming Society (OSS) to take a ‘Big Jump’ in my local river. The OSS cry that ‘swimmers have too long been held in chlorinated captivity’ and beg us to ‘get back to the joy of swimming under an open sky’.
Joy it is. This will be my second year of Wild Swimming, I had a wonderful spring/summer and autumn of swimming outdoors last year. I took my first dip of 2011 in the Atlantic, yes the Atlantic in late spring and I have one thing to say; Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! But I was dared and rose to the challenge because my pride was at stake, or a least a plate of Bannocks and Crowdie was at stake.
You see for me swimming outdoors, wild swimming, its all about the fun. You need to be able to swim, to be safe, but you don’t need to be a pro and you don’t need a triathletes wetsuit either. Just don your swim suit, pack a towel, a warm jumper for after and a thermos of tea, check out http://www.outdoorswimmingsociety.com/ for everything you need to know on wild swimming and go take a Big Jump!
