The ‘S Word’ – a cookery competition for the future

Share

Today I got to take part in the fantastic ‘S Word’ cookery competition which has been held in schools across Berkshire. ‘S’ for seasonality, this competition is all about cooking with fresh, seasonal and local foods. It’s also about cooking techniques and training, training a new and generation of budding chefs ready to take on the challenge of cooking with real food.

To be honest I don’t know who was more excited about the day, me getting to be a judge, or the young people preparing to show their culinary talents. I think it could be me, Because this kind of training and opportunity for young people is all about the future. A future of well sourced, well cooked food, prepared by a new generation of informed and engaged chefs I think is something to get excited about.

Supported by Lambourn’s Sheepdrove Organic Farm the calibre of this competiton is high. The winners of each heat will gain the opportunity to spend the day with the farm’s head chef learning, hands on, about seasonal food. They will also get to cook for some 200 guests at a finalists celebration meal – which I am very honoured to have been invited too.

So from my round who where the winners… two very talented and dedicated cooks who I can see going places….
